Segregated Basement Ward at UVA Hospital

This photograph from 1953 shows the basement ward of the University of Virginia Hospital, which was the segregated space designated for Black patients. It shows a cramped facility without adequate storage and visible steam pipes hanging above the patient’s beds. The basement wards were substandard compared to the facilities for white patients in the upper stories.
