The Savages Let Loose, or the Cruel Fate of the Loyalists

A British political cartoon from 1783 depicts three racist caricatures of Indigenous men, meant to represent newly independent Americans, hanging, scalping, and butchering a group of Loyalist men. The caption reads: “Is this a Peace, when Loyalists must bleed? It is a Bloody Piece of work indeed.” Loyalists during and after the American Revolution faced physical violence, loss of property, and forced exile in many parts of the United States.
