Carroll Tonsler sweeps the sidewalk in front of his storefront on West Main Street, part of the commercial district that served Black Charlottesville residents. Tonsler owned five properties in Vinegar Hill—three of them were residential homes that he rented to working class families, and two of them were businesses: a delicatessen and retail store and a cafe.
