Seat of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, an Italian Renaissance Revival building completed in 1905 and consecrated in 1906, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond. The cathedral was financed by tobacco, insurance, and transportation magnate Thomas Fortune Ryan and his wife, Ida Barry Ryan. A Virginia Historic Landmark, the cathedral is also on the National Register of Historic Places.
