Rosa Harris Jackson Armstead

This is a three-quarter-length photographic portrait of Rosa Harris Jackson Armstead, who self emancipated as a child during the Civil war by walking from Prince William County to Alexandria with her mother and sister. Two of her siblings died in Alexandria and were buried in the city's Freedmen's Cemetery. Armstead eventually became a property owner and a deaconess at the local Ebenezer Baptist Church. She is likely holding up a Bible in this photograph.
