Room in Williamsburg’s Public Hospital

This is an interior room in the recreated Public Hospital for Persons of Insane and Disordered Minds in Williamsburg, furnished and interpreted by Colonial Williamsburg curators as it likely would have appeared in the late eighteenth century. The windows are fitted with iron grates and stays to prevent residents from escaping and leg irons are attached to the walls. A chamber pot is visible in the corner.
