Accommodating the Confederacy

These schematic drawings show how the Virginia State Capitol was rearranged between 1861 and 1865 so that both the Virginia Assembly and Confederate Congress were able to use the same building. Virginia authorities paid for a series of interior remodeling projects to create meeting spaces for Confederate lawmakers inside the Capitol.
