Letter from Annie Henry Christian to Anne Christian Fleming (May 18, 1785)

CONTEXT

In this letter written on May 18, 1785, to her sister-in-law Anne Christian Fleming, Annie Henry Christian describes the beginning of her family’s journey west and their plan to spend the summer along the Holston River in present-day eastern Tennessee while sending people they enslave ahead to Kentucky. Christian’s letters to Fleming during her travels remain one of the best first-person accounts of moving west from any woman of the era.

My Dear Sister,

We are now got down below the great Island a few miles to a place of Col. Bledsoes (!), & thank the Lord we are all pretty well, your Mother held out traviling (!) as well as could (!) be expected, only a day or two past she complaind (!) at times, but now seems better, She bids me tell you that is she don’t (!) find herself hearty at the time of our setting off on our journey she will go back again to Botetourt. We are in a safe place I hope & have plenty of provisions, fish are here in great abundance we live about 20 steps from the North Fork of Holston in Sight of Rhodes Iron works & also in Sight of an ordinary across the River, Sam Ewin will go across with the Negroes with the first company passing out, but I expect we shall stay here this summer in hopes of large numbers coming along in the fall, I hope you will write me dear Sister by all opportunitys (!) & direct your letters to be left at Washington Court House, John Smith & Mr. Gillon goes on with Sam Ewing as soon as convenient, my kindest love & best wishes attend Col. Fleming & all your dear Children I hope to see Leney this summer Remember me to Dr. Smith if with you,
