Brother the Big Knife
You perhaps till now have remain’d in some doubts respecting the Peace; but we are here present with you to Day, to wipe all such thoughts away from your Eyes, and we expect you will listen to us with Sincerity. All the thoughts of the late War, We desire may be at this Time cleansed from your Hearts; We have for some Time past been at Variance, from Depredations committed on your People, which you Supposed to be Occasioned thro’ the Means of your Younger Brothers the Shawanees: but we have now discovered and tell you plainly, it has been the Mingoes that Occasioned it; and afterward stood and looked on, and as you have now heard it from us, We expect you believe and are Satisfied it was them; but be assured we shall take care they shan’t deceive us for the future, and as we have now, I hope made a firm Peace; We intend that neither the Mingoes nor any other foolish People shall set us at variance again: and should any other Nation come and tell you, the Shawanees are going to make War with you, let your Heart be Strong, and don’t believe any such report—for the Shawanees will never go to War with you again. When my Lord departed from us at Hochocing, He then hoped the Peace wood be lasting, and it is now what we hope likewise. And if any Variance shall happen hereafter between us, it shall be because we can’t help it; you see, by bringing down this Prisoner Girl, and these Horses; that we have taken Notice of what his Lordship said to us, and depend, we shall endeavour to remember, and comply with it, for the future. Brother, this is all we your Younger Brothers have to say at present, only hope, that his Lordship will on the Receipt of this, set tow Mingoes at liberty; who can correct affairs among the Mingoes and be of great Service towards the Peace: One of the name [illegible], and his Brother: and hope to see the rest of the Mingoes with My Lord at Fort Pit in spring: and as we prepare to see you here some Time in April; we shall speak more to you then.
