Portsmouth, New Hampshire
This double-imaged card shows Pleasant Street, a main thoroughfare in historic Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a port city on the Piscataqua River. The Davis Brothers photography studio, run by siblings Lewis and Charles Davis, was located in Portsmouth, and for a time on Pleasant Street. Between 1856 and 1903 the studio produced thousands of images, many of them stereographs such as this one.
A stereograph is a card with two nearly identical photographs or photomechanical prints, which appear as a single three-dimensional image when viewed through a device known as a stereoscope.
