Portrait of a Sailor

A Black man wearing a red neckerchief and a sailor’s uniform poses in front of a ship in this folk-art portrait from around 1800. Neither the artist nor the subject of the portrait are known, but it is possibly a depiction of Paul Cuffe, a free Black abolitionist sea captain who died in 1812. The painting is currently in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
