General August V. Kautz

Union cavalry officer August V. Kautz bears the insignia of a major general in this portrait attributed to Mathew Brady. During the Petersburg Campaign of 1864–1865, Kautz was noted for his lightning attacks against the railroad lines supplying Richmond and Petersburg. The German-born officer was officially promoted to major general shortly before the fall of Richmond in April 1865.
