Pig Iron
Charles Ridgely’s Northampton Ironworks in Baltimore County, Maryland, produced this pig iron ingot in 1772. It is marked with raised cast letters reading “N.HAMPton COMP 1772.” Pig iron is an impure form of iron made using a blast furnace. It is called pig iron because it is cast into blocks called “pigs.”
