Paid woman from barracks…

Virginia governor Thomas Jefferson noted in his account book that on August 13, 1779, he paid a “woman from barracks” eighteen pounds for three days’ work weaving lace. While the woman has not been identified, she was probably one of the more than 4,000 British and German prisoners of war who were interned in an area called “the barracks” in Charlottesville for about two years following the Battle of Saratoga.
