Women’s suffrage activist Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote this speech for the “First Foremothers’ Celebration” in New York City in 1892. She named Hannah Lee Corbin as an early women’s rights activist, mistakenly identifying her as being from North Carolina. “Hannah Lee Corbin,” wrote Stanton, “protested against ‘taxation without representation,’ as the height of injustice to the Colonies.” By doing so, according to Stanton, Corbin “proclaimed the basic principles of a republic.”
