“Open-air” classroom at Moore Street School

A group of Black students, wrapped in blankets, attend class in an "open-air" classroom at Moore Street School in Richmond. The goal of “open-air” classrooms was to prevent the spread of tuberculosis and protect children vulnerable to disease from crowded classrooms. The Moore Street School, constructed in the Carver neighborhood in 1887, was a segregated elementary school intentionally built for Black students. The structure still stands, and local groups are raising money to restore the historic building and turn it into a community center.
