Norfolk Students Rally to Reopen Schools

This photograph, taken for the Norfolk Ledger-Dispatch, shows a group of white high school students holding a sign which reads: “We want our education.” These students, attendees of the segregated Granby High School in Norfolk, were participating in an “Open the Schools” rally held on September 29, 1958, in response to the closure of their school by Gov. J. Lindsay Almond to avoid integration. The police attempted to break up the rally, which forced the protesters to a nearby parking lot.
