Mattaponi Indian Baptist Church

Having outgrown the mixed-use meeting hall where they had previously held services, members of the Mattaponi Indian Baptist congregation began construction of a church in the summer of 1934. When it was completed in 1935, the church had a press tin ceiling, maroon carpeting, and oil lamps. The Mattaponi Indian Baptist Church represents a significant historical moment for the Mattaponi and continues to serve as a religious and cultural hub.
