Martha Jefferson Randolph
Thomas Jefferson’s daughter, Martha “Patsy” Jefferson Randolph, is the subject of this portrait by American artist Thomas Sully. She sat for the portrait at the age of 64, but Sully, who had known her for decades, portrayed her somewhat more youthfully. Educated in Paris during her father’s tenure as minister plenipotentiary to France, Martha Jefferson Randolph passed on her above-average education to her eleven surviving children.
