Lost Free Papers Ad

In this newspaper advertisement published in the June 20, 1855, edition of Richmond's Daily Dispatch, Edward Bradley, who describes himself as “a free man of color,” seeks a small tin box in which he kept his free papers and an Indian Register from the Trustees of the Pamunkey Tribe, which proved his status as a free Indigenous man. Without these papers, Bradley was at risk of any number of legal problems and even enslavement.
