Leander James McCormick

Leander James McCormick, an American inventor, businessman, and real estate tycoon, is the subject of this photographic portrait printed in McCormick's self-published Family Record and Biography (1896). In 1831, McCormick's father, Robert McCormick Jr., perfected a mechanical reaper that helped revolutionize agriculture. McCormick and his brother Cyrus McCormick built a corporation in Chicago to manufacture and market their father's "Old Reliable" reaper—though Cyrus took a great deal of the credit for the invention of the reaper.
