Lafayette Wounded at Brandywine

This engraving, made by British portrait engraver Charles Henry Jeens, depicts the Marquis de Lafayette’s leg injury at the Battle of Brandywine (September 11, 1777). While it is unlikely that General Washington cradled the wounded Lafayette in his arms as the battle raged around them as depicted in this image, Lafayette’s bravery at Brandywine did impress Washington.
