L. Francis Griffin with Students

This image, published in Jet magazine in 1961, shows Reverend L. Francis Griffin with two students outside of his church, First Baptist Church in Farmville. Following the public-school closures of Prince Edward County Schools in 1959, the Black community of Farmville provided whatever educational alternatives they could to their children, including classes at church. Public schools remained closed in Prince Edward County from fall of 1959 to the fall of 1964.
