Kitchen Destroyed by Hurricane Camille

This 1969 photograph shows a heavily-damaged kitchen in Massies Mill, an unincorporated community of some forty houses adjacent to the Tye River in Nelson County. Massies Mill was one of the hardest hit localities when the remnants of Hurricane Camille unexpectedly dropped at least twenty-seven inches of rain overnight in the county from August 19-20, 1969, taking 124 lives and causing more than $100 million in damages.
