British Landing at Kip’s Bay

Cannon smoke rises into the sky as five British warships bombard the shore of Kip’s Bay, New York, on September 15, 1776. Soldiers in red and blue uniforms, packed into dozens of boats, wait their chance to row to shore. Robert Cleveley, a young British clerk on the warship HMS Asia, an eyewitness to the landing of British troops at Kip’s Bay, completed this drawing in 1777.
