Justices of the Peace for Sussex County

This commission, signed by Governor Thomas Jefferson and dated November 12, 1779, appointed Thomas Sanders, Lawrence Smith, John Nicholson, John Irby, Flood Nicholson, Green Hill, Nathaniel Dunn, Sterling Harwell, Cyrell Avery, and John Judkins as Justices of the Peace in Sussex County. The Virginia Constitution of 1776 changed the process of electing justices of the peace for the county courts. The governor remained responsible for appointing the justices of the peace, but he could only choose from a list of names submitted by the General Assembly.
