Union Ridge, Formerly Ivy Creek Baptist Church

This photograph depicts a church located near the juncture of Ivy Creek and the Rivanna River in Albemarle County. In the post–Civil War era, a vibrant Black community resided in the area and established their own Baptist congregation. In 1876 a group of Black people purchased land jointly and a portion of the land was set aside so that this church, then known as Ivy Creek Baptist Church, could be erected. It remains in use, but is currently called the Union Ridge Baptist Church.
