Isaac Franklin

Isaac Franklin, co-owner of Franklin and Armfield, a powerful slave-trading company based in Alexandria, is the subject of this waist-length portrait by Washington Bogart Cooper, a prolific artist from Tennessee. This portrait is owned by Belmont Mansion in Nashville, the former home of Adelicia Hayes Franklin Acklen and her second husband, Joseph Alexander Smith Acklen. Adelicia's first husband, Isaac Franklin, died in 1846 and bequeathed his widow a large fortune, making her the wealthiest woman in Tennessee.
