Map Tracking the Path and Precipitation Produced by Hurricane Camille

This digital map produced by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration tracks the route of Hurricane Camille from the day before its landfall in Mississippi on August 17, 1969, until it swept across the eastern United States and headed out to the Atlantic Ocean on August 21, 1969. The storm, a category 5 hurricane at landfall, unexpectedly turned east on August 19 and headed over the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Though the storm had been downgraded to a tropical depression, the rain intensified and dumped at least twenty-seven inches of rain overnight in "West Central Nelson County, VA," as indicated on the map. Nelson County received the highest rainfall during the entire span of the storm—nearly three times the amount that fell in "Mississippi Test Facility, MS," where they received a little over ten inches of precipitation.
