Hollins College Graduation

A silent 16mm news clip from WSLA-TV in Roanoke captures scenes from the commencement exercises at Hollins College in June 1960.  Students and faculty file into the graduation ceremonies and then the president of the college, John Everett, is seen giving a speech and conferring degrees on the one hundred and twelve graduates of the all-women's college. An accompanying script by the news anchor describes the president's remarks, noting that Everett urged the graduates to maintain a balance between "the restless spirit of learning and the demands of secure knowledge," and to "stand firm against the onslaught of irrational nonsense."
