Replica of the Hiawatha Belt

This imitation wampum belt is a recreation of the “Hiawatha Belt,” also known as the “Confederacy Belt,” a symbol of the Haudenosaunee confederacy. The original belt was woven from purple and white wampum beads, carved from quahog shells, and represented a peace agreement between five formerly warring nations. The symbols, from left to right, represent the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga (symbolized by the Tree of Peace), Oneida, and Mohawk. The joining of these former enemies under what the Haudenosaunee refer to as the Great Law of Peace created the Haudenosaunee confederacy.
