Augustine Herrman Bohemian

An oval frame bearing the words Augustine Herrman Bohemian surrounds the figure of a man in this detail from an engraved map titled Virginia and Maryland As it is Planted and Inhabited this present Year 1670 (1673). Hermann, the cartographer, was born in Bohemia, now the Czech Republic. This figure may be Herrman or a composite portrait by the engraver, Henry Faithorne. To the right of the figure is the image of a canoe being navigated just off the coast of New Jersey by a group of Native Americans.
