Harland Bartholomew

This photograph shows civil engineer and segregationist Harland Bartholomew as he appeared around 1936. Bartholomew and his firm, Harland Bartholomew and Associates, completed comprehensive city plans for thirty-two cities in the 1920s, and he remained active in city planning into the 1950s. His designs usually included slum clearance, the construction of public housing, and segregated land use, which often displaced Black communities in favor of highways.
