Governor’s Council Chamber

Thirteen elaborately carved chairs, one for the governor and twelve for the council, are placed around the central table of the governor’s Council chamber on the second floor of the reconstructed Capitol building in Colonial Williamsburg. The governor’s Council advised the royal governor or his deputy, the lieutenant governor, on all executive matters from 1625 to the outbreak of the American Revolution. For this recreation of the Council chamber, Colonial Williamsburg curators have laid out books, newspapers, maps, and papers on the table as though the councilors are in the middle of a meeting and have just stepped out of the room for a moment.
