Governor Stanley Tour of Construction

Governor Thomas Stanley observes the construction progress of the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike from a tour bus on May 9, 1957. Stakeholders in the project gave the governor a tour of all the construction zones—including a drive on a stretch of the finished roadway. In this photograph the tour group is in Shockoe Valley, looking toward the Marshall Street viaduct in downtown Richmond.
