Gladys C. Cooke

Gladys C. Cooke, an 80-year-old life-long resident of the Carver neighborhood in Richmond, sits on her porch with a newspaper in this 1990 photograph. Her street was one of the only remaining residential streets in Carver at this time, the rest having been destroyed for the construction of the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike or heavy industry. In her interview with Richmond Times-Dispatch, Cooke said: “I don’t want to see any more industry.”
