Fulton from Libby Hill

This photograph, taken in the 1890s, shows a view of the town of Fulton from Libby Hill in Richmond. Two steepled churches stand near the center of town, and a group of people play baseball near the foreground of the image. At the time, Fulton housed several manufacturing companies, and the town was mostly populated by a diverse group of working class families. By the 1930s, due to racially restrictive covenants, the population of Fulton became mostly Black. In the 1960s, Richmond used urban renewal funding to completely raze the area, and by 1980, only four buildings were left standing.
