Fort Ward Park Entrance

This photograph shows the entrance gate to Fort Ward Park in Alexandria, a reconstruction of the original, Civil-War-era gate. Fort Ward was originally a temporary fort built at the outbreak of the war in May 1861 to defend Washington, D.C. After the Civil War, many free Black people settled in the area, creating a community known as "The Fort.” In the 1950s, the Alexandria City Council voted to evict many of the Black residents of the area and create Fort Ward Park, a public historical park focused on the Civil War history of the site.
