Fort Fincastle (Renamed Fort Henry)

John Murray, fourth earl of Dunmore and colonial governor of Virginia, called for the construction of Fort Fincastle in the summer of 1774 at the outbreak of a war with the Shawnee and Mingo tribes of the Ohio region. The fort, constructed on the Ohio River near Wheeling Creek, was named after Dunmore, as he held the title of Viscount Fincastle. After the outbreak of the American Revolution, the Patriots renamed the fort Fort Henry in honor of the firebrand public speaker Patrick Henry
