Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute (now Virginia State University)

A football game takes place in 1900 on the front campus of the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute (later Virginia Normal and Industrial Institute, and eventually Virginia State University) in Ettrick, near Petersburg. Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute was founded for African American students in 1882. The building shown here, Old Virginia Hall, was constructed between 1883 and 1888 and demolished in 1937.
