CONTEXT

In this short document, dated June 12, 1618, Rogert Hawfeilde, the mayor’s clerk of Leicester, records the results of a meeting about an upcoming running lottery sponsored by the Virginia Company of London. Running lotteries, the proceeds of which benefited the company, allowed purchasers to immediately draw lots, which either indicated prizes or were blank. The transcription, by the scholar Robert C. Johnson, retains the original spelling and punctuation but in some cases expands contractions and abbreviations.
