Enslaved Indian Servant Isaac

In this newspaper advertisement published in the April 14, 1768, edition of Richmond's Virginia Gazette (Purdie & Dixon), Robert Bolling Jr. gives a detailed description of Isaac, an “Indian slave, aged about 40” who had self-emancipated from Bolling’s plantation. Isaac, according to Bolling, “was born and lived many years on the brook of Chickahominy” and could be seeking assistance from family in Goochland. Bolling wrote that Isaac "wore long curled hair before his elopement, but his countenance and disposition are altogether Indian.”
