Map of Dinwiddie County

This map created during the Civil War by Confederate topographical engineers gives a detailed survey of Dinwiddie County, a largely rural county in Southside. The 1864 map shows the existing roads (in red), the wooded areas, the names of some residents, and places such as the county courthouse. The map was drawn under the direction of Confederate captain Albert H. Campbell, who was appointed head of the Topographical Department in the Department of Northern Virginia in June 1862 by General Robert E. Lee.
