Excavations at the Lumpkin’s Jail Site

This photograph shows excavations taking place on December 16, 2008, at the site of Lumpkin's Jail, in the Shockoe Bottom district of Richmond. Dotted lines indicate the location of buildings that were part of the slave-jail complex, which included a residence for its owner, Robert Lumpkin, and a boardinghouse for slave traders visiting Richmond. Slaves awaiting auction were held, sometimes for long periods of time, in slave pens on the property.
