Death of Major Ferguson at Kings Mountain
This engraving by Charles Henry Jeens, based on an original work by New York-based artist Alonzo Chappel, dramatically depicts the death of British major Patrick Ferguson at the Battle of Kings Mountain. Ferguson is shot from his startled horse, while a red-coated British officer reaches out to help him. Behind them, British and Patriot militia skirmish in a thickly forested backdrop. The Patriot's success at Kings Mountain was a damaging defeat to the British, who had hoped to build up a substantial Loyalist force in the South and were prevented from doing so.
