In addition to various essays, teacher resources, and filmed lectures, the site contains a wide array of primary documents like the one above: a letter from Sir Richard Grenville to John Blighe, dating to ca. 1580. In our entry on the Roanoke colonies, we describe Sir Richard as Sir Walter Raleigh‘s “often arrogant and bull-headed cousin” who in 1585 commanded the flagship Tiger. The letter above, written to another cousin, reflects tougher times. Apparently Sir Richard was looking for money!
