Cox’s Row
This photograph shows Cox’s Row in a predominantly Black part of Charlottesville. In the 1960s the city voted between Cox’s Row and Hartman’s Mill Road as potential sites for new public housing. Advocates for the Cox’s Row site argued it was convenient to public transportation and near, as one published broadside put it, “Negro churches” and “Negro public schools.” Approximately thirty families were evicted from Cox’s Row before its demolition, only about half of which were eligible for public housing.
