Possible Formerly Enslaved Man or Contraband
The Hampton History Museum, which owns this circa 1892 photographic portrait, identifies this elderly man as possibly having been formerly enslaved or perhaps having been a contraband—a person who self-emancipated during the Civil War by taking refuge behind Federal lines. This print was in an album of photographs taken by Charles Herbert Hewins or Jesse Andrus Hewins, possibly in conjunction with the Hampton Institute Camera Club.
