Construction of the Pentagon

This photograph shows the Pentagon, the command center of the U.S. military, while it was under construction in 1942. It was originally intended to be a temporary structure, to meet the needs of the U.S. military while it prepared for entry into World War II. Architects George Edwin Bergstrom and David Julius Witmer designed it in the shape of a pentagon as a reference to traditional military fortifications. It was constructed incredibly quickly, in the span of sixteen months, from September 1941 to December 1942. Located in Arlington, the construction of the Pentagon and its surrounding roadways displaced about 900 residents, who were neither provided with adequate alternative housing nor paid fair prices for their homes.
