Clermont Farm, Clarke County
This log structure at Clermont Farm in Clarke County was used for quartering enslaved workers. Constructed in 1823, this is the only surviving quarter for enslaved people of the three claimed by Clermont on the 1860 census.
This structure is of one story, constructed on a stone foundation with a steeply pitched wood-shingled gable roof. It has been expanded over time, but when it was first built the house consisted of two equally sized rooms heated by stoves serviced by one central brick chimney. Board and batten siding covers most of the original exterior walls. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources and the Clermont Foundation currently manage Clermont, a 335-acre working farm, and they completed rehabilitation work on this historic structure in 2015.
